The oldest shopping mall in Krakow-Sukiennice

May 6, 2023

When you visit the Main Square in Krakow, don't forget to visit the Sukiennice Cloth Hall. The oldest shopping center in Krakow is also one of the most recognizable monuments of Krakow and a real pearl of Renaissance architecture.

The first Sukiennice Cloth Hall was built in the 13th century when Krakow became a city. This is where trade was concentrated, and the original cloth hall consisted of two rows of stone stalls locked at night behind bars to protect the newly created street from thieves. The brick and roofed cloth hall was built only in the 14th century, and its traces can still be seen today. In 1555, the building was destroyed by fire, but due to its very important function for the city, reconstruction began immediately. Over the years, the unrenovated building lost its splendor, and wooden sheds obscured its hideous beauty. In the 19th century, a thorough renovation of this building began, the effects of which can still be seen today. Despite so many years of history, one thing related to the Cloth Hall continues uninterruptedly. Trade continues there to this day. Stalls, which used to be filled with cloth, today offer souvenirs.

In addition to souvenirs on the ground floor, on the first floor, the oldest museum in the city is located. Opened in 1879, it focuses on the art of the 19th century and focuses on amazing Polish painters such as Jan Matejko. The museum is small in size, which means you can go there for a short visit and admire each element in detail.

But it is not everything. You can also visit the underground of the Sukiennice Cloth Hall. If you want to see what the Main Square looked like in the Middle Ages, You can visit the Rynek Underground Museum. Opened in 2010, it goes a few meters underground (below the Market Square and the Cloth Hall), where you can see excavated remains, such as original merchant stalls. This interactive museum gives a unique insight into the city and its medieval past. Limited number of people can enter the museum at once, so be sure to book your tickets in advance.

Now that you know something more about the attractions of the Krakow Sukiennice, we hope that you will also put these points on your list of places to visit. Being on the Main Square you have to check it out.

Best Regards
