Wieliczka Salt Mine - a Polish underground treasure.

One of Kraków’s top tourist attractions is undoubtedly a salt mine located in Wieliczka. Wieliczka is a small town about 12 km to the southeast. Every year over 1 million tourists from all over the world visit the famous Wieliczka Salt Mine. They admire impressive salt sculptures, brine lakes, underground chapels, and chambers chiseled in salt. The first official tourist trail in Wieliczka opened underground way back in the mid-19th century. Since then, Wieliczka Salt Mine has been ranked a number one favorite thing about Kraków (by Cracovians) many times. There are several ways to visit the mine, however, the most popular is the traditional ‘Tourist Route’ which leaves from the Daniłowicza Shaft. The route covers the most impressive parts of the salt mine, including saline lakes, ancient mining tools, and majestic chapels and chambers.

The Wieliczka Salt Mine has worked for 700 years. During those years, a total of some 245 kilometers of passages, as well as 2,040 caverns of varied sizes have been made. The "Tourist Route" starts 64 meters deep and ends 135 meters below the earth’s surface. In 1978, Wieliczka Salt Mine was inscribed on the original list of UNESCO World Heritage. There is also a sanatorium for people suffering from asthma and allergy. It is situated 135 meters deep underground.

It starts at Level 1 of the salt mine (64 meters deep underground). We will walk around 2 kilometers, visiting around 20 breathtaking chambers surrounded by salt in all shades of grey, black, and white, and two majestic chapels. One of them is one of the most famous chapels in Poland – the Chapel of St. Kinga. The Chapel of St. Kinga is the heart of the mine. It is filled with amazingly illuminated religious bas-relief sculptures carved in salt. During the trip, you will have a unique opportunity to taste the salt on your lips, experience pure silence, and finally, listen to the stories of the history of the mine. Once the sightseeing is over, we will take the elevator to go back to the surface.

The temperature in Wieliczka Salt Mine is constant (14 – 16° C). Be sure to wear comfortable shoes and warmer clothes.

If you also want to see kilometers of underground corridors with breathtaking chambers, we will be happy to unveil them to you during the all-inclusive Wieliczka Salt Mine Tour.

Best regards
